St Finian brought Christianity to the Highlands 1,400 years ago. A monastic tradition developed, absorbing the already existing religious 'pagan' practices. The powerful central church eventually forced all monks and hermits into their monasteries (to labour for the economic strength of the church), thus ending part of the contemplative tradition of the early Celtic world.
